Since pioneering the first corporate purchase agreement for renewable power more than a decade ago, Google has played a pivotal role in accelerating clean energy solutions, including the next generation of advanced clean technologies. Now, we are stepping up these efforts by signing the world’s first corporate agreement to purchase nuclear energy from multiple Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) developed by Kairos Power. The initial phase of work aims to bring Kairos Power’s first SMR into service quickly and safely by 2030, followed by deployment of additional reactors through 2035. Overall, the deal will enable the delivery of up to 500MW of new 24/7 carbon-free power to U.S. power. We will build our power grid and help more communities benefit from clean, affordable nuclear power.

This agreement is important for two reasons:

The electric grid needs new sources of power to support AI technologies that drive major scientific advances, improve service to businesses and customers, and promote national competitiveness and economic growth. This agreement will help accelerate new technologies to meet energy needs cleanly and reliably and unlock the potential of AI for everyone. Nuclear solutions provide clean 24-hour power and help ensure you meet your electricity needs carbon-free. Energy every hour of every day. Promoting these sources in close collaboration with supportive local communities will rapidly decarbonize power grids around the world.

Why we support new advanced nuclear energy

This agreement is part of our efforts to develop and commercialize a broad portfolio of advanced clean power technologies to power our global data centers and offices. This approach complements the use of variable renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power and helps us achieve our ambitious goals of 24/7 carbon-free energy and net zero.

The next generation of advanced nuclear reactors offer new avenues to accelerate nuclear development thanks to their simplified designs and robust inherent safety. The compact modular design shortens construction schedules, allows for deployment to more locations, and makes final project delivery more predictable.

Investments in advanced nuclear technology can also have direct economic benefits for communities across the United States. According to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), nuclear power has the highest economic impact of any power generation source. Create big, high-paying, long-term jobs. The agency estimates that 375,000 additional workers will be needed to reach 200 gigawatts of U.S. advanced nuclear capacity by 2050.
