Google plans to focus on its Gemini AI product and the business side of its technology in 2025, according to internal discussions this month.

At an internal meeting on Dec. 18, Google CEO Sundar Pichai said the company’s business is building and consuming AI technology Gemini as the internet giant looks to surpass Microsoft-backed OpenAI. CNBC reported that the company emphasized that it would be expanded to cater to people with disabilities.

Pichai acknowledged that the company is under “surveillance” from regulators around the world, but said this shows Google’s enormous size and importance. He urged employees not to become distracted.

“I think 2025 is going to be a big year,” Pichai said, according to CNBC.

Meanwhile, Google DeepMind’s Demis Hassabis said the company would focus on its Gemini app and promised to quickly evolve the technology starting next year. This was in response to concerns that Google was not necessarily keeping pace with OpenAI. Hassabis also discussed how Gemini will be monetized in the future.

Pichai emphasized the need to be “lean” and said headcount does not necessarily solve the problem. According to CNBC, he expressed the belief that constraints can lead to creativity.

Google’s Gemini recently turned one year old.

“We celebrated the first anniversary of the Gemini era by introducing the next agent era in AI, enabled by our newest and most capable model, Gemini 2.0. Chip news and tons of new generated AI on Android, Pixel, Gemini, and developer platforms AI Studio and Vertex AI “It was certainly a December to remember,” Google said in a blog post summarizing this year’s AI achievements.
