Blue Origin’s big leap forward
Blue Origin, founded 25 years ago by Jeff Bezos, has been taking paying passengers, including Bezos himself, to the edge of space since 2021. These short trips, launched from Texas, use small rockets named after Alan Shepard, the first American to go into space. The New Glenn rocket launched today is five times as tall.
The company has invested more than $1 billion in the development of New Glenn Launch Site, transforming Cape Canaveral Space Force Station’s historic Complex 36 into a state-of-the-art facility. The facility is located just 9 miles from the mission control center and rocket factory and is located outside the gates of NASA’s Kennedy Space Center.
The New Glenn rocket, named after astronaut John Glenn, is a two-stage, reusable rocket designed to carry payloads to low Earth orbit and beyond. Blue Origin’s successful test flight demonstrated the rocket’s engineering capabilities and reusability, further solidifying the company’s position in the competitive space race.
Elon Musk congratulates Jeff Bezos
Sundar Pichai wasn’t the only technology leader to praise this achievement. SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk also congratulated Bezos on his X milestone. He shared a post that read, “Congratulations on reaching orbit on your first attempt!” @JeffBezos.”
Interestingly, Bezos responded to Musk’s post by saying “Thank you” with a folded hands emoji 🙏.
