Admittedly, the Malayalam film industry is yet to recover. Because similar to the previous situation in the industry in 2023, there were some failures in 2024 as well. We provided unique movies tailored to your needs. Although the success rate is low compared to the number of films released on screens this year, take a look at how filmmakers have used a certain formula to captivate audiences and generate huge box office revenues. In 2024, a huge number of films were released in the Malayalam film industry, but only a handful of films were successful as profitable ventures. Although not a hit, these films literally broke the four walls and received critical acclaim from audiences and critics in other states.

Ajayante Random Moshanam: Tovino Thomas talks about Malayalam films, moving to OTT and his massive fan following

Produced on a very low budget, Premal will definitely rank among the highest grossing projects in Malayalam cinema in 2024. This is followed by ‘Manjumer Boyz’, ‘Brahmayugam’, ‘Aadujeevitham’, ‘Aveshyam’, ‘ARM’ and ‘Gurvayoor’. Ambalanadair”, “Kishkindakandam”, “Vaza”, “Varshangaluk Shesham” and “Brahmayugam”.
Now Malayalam audiences are looking for a proper theatrical experience – ‘ARM’ director Jithin Lal
Kudos to newcomer director Jishin Lal for pulling off a blockbuster and making it a success as his first directorial project. In an exclusive interview with ETimes, the talented director said: “Nowadays, Malayalam audiences are looking for a proper theatrical experience that provides authentic entertainment. They can discern which movies to watch in theaters. ‘Manjummel Boys’, ‘Brahmayugam’, Movies like “Premalu” are examples of the type of content that connects with viewers. Filmmakers are now cracking the code on the types of content and storytelling styles audiences prefer. ”
Smaller films were also excellent.
Contrary to the words of the “ARM” director, there were several smaller films that did not necessarily require a theatrical experience and received a lot of attention from viewers.
Films like ‘Golam’, ‘Bharathanatyam’, ‘Aattam’ and ‘Ullozhukku’ received good response from the audience and also turned out to be hits due to their engaging content. Looking at it this way, this year’s films that focused solely on content and films that required theater viewing were very popular with audiences.

2024 has brought us a number of bold and inspiring female characters on screen, and one of them is undoubtedly Rajalakshmi, the character from the superhit comedy film Mandakini. Speaking to ETimes, she said, “This past year has been a great year with a lot of hits from all over India.” Films like ‘Mandakini’, ‘Premal’, ‘Urojuk’ and ‘Sukshma Darshani’ had women in prominent roles and did well at the box office. This is a very positive sign for the Malayalam film industry. The commercial success of women’s films suggests that more socially relevant, female-centered stories will be created in the future. ”
Speaking about her role in ‘Mandakini’, the talented actress said, The most difficult part of this role was gaining almost 6-7 kg in a short period of time. Moreover, my action scenes were highly appreciated by the audience. I hope to continue playing meaningful roles like this in commercial films and look forward to more opportunities like this. ”

The curse of sequels – not everything was positive!
If nothing else, 2024 saw a new trend in Malayalam films where most of the films did not have a proper ending. From “Golam”, “Turbo”, “Vaaza” to “Tharavan”, most of this year’s superhit films fell into the trap of the ‘sequel curse’.
This was most evident in Mammootty’s ‘Turbo’, written by Midn Manuel Thomas. The movie ended with a cliffhanger that literally came out of nowhere and ruined the flow of the climax. This is a trick many writers use when they’re unsure of the climax of a movie or series, but this constant sequel curse is one of the downsides for many superhit movies released in 2024. There was one.
How did “ARM” break the “sequel curse”?

Just when the Malayalam film industry was about to be mired in cliffhanger issues, ‘ARM’ director Jithin Lal completely broke the convention with a befitting ending starring Tovino Thomas. Such a fitting ending requires special encouragement and shows how much confidence the screenwriter and director have in this project.
Asif Ali’s ‘Kishkinda Kaandam’, Mammootty’s ‘Brahmayugam’ and even ‘Premal’ are also trying to stay away from this so-called ‘sequel curse’.
Happy December!
With Unnu Mukundan’s ‘Marco’ and Aashiq Abu’s ‘The Rifle Club’, the Malayalam film industry has proven that it is capable of delivering strong action films. Director Unni Mukundan recently said in a promotional interview, “Marco” was initially touted as the most violent Malayalam film ever made, but now it turns out to be the most brutal film in the Indian film industry. spoke.
