Even though 20 years have passed since then, palace malice incidentit remains one of the worst events in NBA history. In a 75-minute interview with Byron Scott, Metta detailed his personal life beyond basketball. He also talked about Palace’s bad intentions and his friend, former basketball player Michael Jordan.

This interview was shared on Byron Scott’s YouTube channel, Byron Scott’s Fast Break. Metta said: “The last time I spoke to MJ was right after the incident. He was the only player who called me. He said, ‘Don’t worry, young man, I’ll get you back.’ ” he said. When he said that, I remember thinking, “Oh, if MJ believes in me, he’ll come back again.” But even the legendary Jordan faced challenges from David Stern, who was famously harsh on his players. ”
Artest was not solely responsible, but he still had to take the blame. He was suspended for 86 games, including the remainder of the regular season and 13 playoff games. This was the longest suspension in NBA history. He was also charged with assault and battery and sentenced to one year of probation, 60 hours of community service, a $250 fine, and anger management counseling.
At such a difficult moment, MJ was the only one willing to look into Metta’s situation, despite her infamous reputation. Although the incident has passed and Metta still has a successful career, this incident is still always talked about.

What is the palace malice incident?

The incident occurred at the Palace of Auburn Hills in the final moments of a midseason battle between the Indiana Pacers and Detroit Pistons. It was a battle between fans and players. It all started when Pistons center Ben Wallace attempted a layup but was fouled from behind by Pacers small forward Ron Artest.
Enraged, Wallace shoved Metta and players from both teams began fighting. Later, when the payers were separated, fan John Green hit Metta with a drink. Metta thought it was Michael Ryan (another fan) and lunged at him. It didn’t take long for the incident to escalate into a large brawl. The match was stopped midway through and police were called to bring the situation under control.

The fallout from the incident was severe, with the NBA punishing nine players, including Metta and Wallace, for a total of 146 games. They lost $11 million in compensation. Additionally, five players were charged with assault and sentenced to one year of probation and community service. The incident prompted the NBA to increase security between players and fans and restrict alcohol sales at games.
