Tommy Robinson, who often makes headlines for his extremist views, is once again the center of attention on social media.
Mykhaila Peterson, the daughter of Canadian author and YouTube star Jordan B. Peterson, recently posted on X that she wanted to share one of her father’s interviews with Robinson on YouTube, but was unable to do so.
“Oh. I tried to share @jordanbpeterson’s first interview with @TRObinsonNewEra where he talks about grooming. Sharing and comments are disabled on @YouTube. Reuploading to X’s channel. @YouTube You realize you are on the side of the rapist, right? SIC,” she wrote.
Sharing the post, X owner Elon Musk tagged YouTube and wrote, “What’s going on, @YouTube?”
Robinson’s controversial views on immigration and Islam, as well as his inflammatory rhetoric, have often caused controversy.
In October, Robinson (real name Stephen Yaxley-Lennon) was sentenced to 18 months in prison after pleading guilty to contempt of court for repeatedly making false claims against Syrian refugees.
Elon Musk had questioned the sentencing.
Here are the reactions of netizens:
Multiple social media users responded to Musk’s post. While criticizing censorship, netizens called on Musk, the owner of X (formerly Twitter), to buy YouTube.
“Freedom of speech = freedom of contact. That’s what’s happening, Elon. We used to just call it censorship,” the user said.
Another user said, “Everyone should stop creating content on YouTube. It’s a censorship platform. Post it directly to X.”
“YouTube is still busy censoring. If they don’t like what you say or disagree with your opinion, they will silence you,” added yet another.
“Can I buy YouTube ELON?” asked another user.
“Elon Musk, that’s why you need to create your own platform to rival YouTube!” suggested another user.
Some users criticized Musk’s questioning of censorship as ironic in the wake of the recent Make America Great Again (MAGA) controversy.
“This reminded me of what’s going on with X, including account suspension and removal of subscriptions and verification badges,” the user said.
About Tommy Robinson
Robinson previously served nine weeks of a 13-month sentence for illegally filming a courtroom.
In 2018, Robinson’s Twitter account was also banned for “hateful content”. However, it was revived in 2023 after Elon Musk took office. In November 2022, Musk announced a “general amnesty” for suspended accounts that “do not violate the law or engage in egregious spam.”
Peterson’s interview was criticized, and Peterson was accused of justifying his extremist views by associating with Robinson.
This raises the question of whether Peterson’s willingness to engage with controversial figures like Robinson is an endorsement of their views or a commitment to free speech and dialogue. sparked widespread debate.
Although Peterson defended the interview by claiming he was giving Robinson a chance to explain his views, critics say it served to amplify Robinson’s ideology and platform and labeled Peterson a far-right extremist. He argued that there was a possibility of a connection.
