Deepmind Group claims the Alphageometry2 AI app run at the gold medal level of Olympiad

A team of researchers from Google’s DeepMind project is responsible for solving problems given to high school students who have participated in the International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO) for the past 25 years, and the Alphage Measurement 2 AI will be awarded gold medals. Reported to have been performed at the level. In a paper submitted to Arxiv Preprint Server, the team outlines Alphageometry2 and its scores when solving IMO problems.

Previous research has shown that AI that can solve geometry problems requires both a higher level of reasoning ability and the ability to choose from the possible steps when working towards solving problems, making it more sophisticated. It has been suggested that it could lead to an app.

To that end, the Deepmind team has been working to develop more sophisticated geometric solution apps. That first iteration was released last January and was called Alphage Measurement. That second iteration is called Alphageometry2.

The Deepmind team combines it with another system called Alpha Proof, which implements mathematical proofs. The team discovered that they could solve four of the six issues listed in IMO this summer. In this new study, the researchers expanded the testing of the system’s capabilities by giving multiple problems that IMO used over the past 25 years.

The researchers built Alphageometry2 by combining multiple core elements. One of them is Google’s Gemini language model. Other elements use mathematical rules to come up with solutions to the original problem and some of it.

The team points out that in order to solve many IMO issues, specific constructs need to be added before proceeding. This means that the system must be able to create them. Their system then tries to predict which of the added figures will need to be used to make the deductions needed to solve the problem. Alphageometry2 suggests steps that may be used to solve a particular problem and checks the logic steps before using them.

To test the system, researchers chose 45 issues from IMO, but some of them had to be converted to a more usable format, resulting in a total of 50 issues. They report that Alphageometry2 can correctly resolve 42 of 42.
