Cubs President Jed Hoyer believes the Dodgers’ success goes beyond payroll and says focusing on spending is ‘unconscionable’

The Los Angeles Dodgers won the World Series in 2024, but faced a lack of pitching staff as many of their starting pitchers missed the postseason due to injury. They fixed that by signing Blake Snell to a mega contract and then acquiring Loki Sasaki. Now, they’ve broken even further and strengthened their bullpen by signing notable relief pitcher Tanner Scott.

Their salaries after Tanner Scott’s four-year, $72 million deal, which averages $18 million per year, exceed the luxury tax limit of $375 million for the 2025 season. That amount is expected to be at least $70 million more than the next-best Philadelphia Phillies, unless the club trades any big pieces.

To be sure, most of the baseball world doesn’t like the salary deferral strategy the Dodgers, especially president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman, have employed in recent years. This allowed them to sign the likes of Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman, leaving them plenty of room to sign even more players within their salary limits.

The Chicago Cubs get a lot of hate, but Jed Hoyer, the Chicago Cubs’ president of baseball operations, feels this is the team’s recipe for success.

“Listen to the Dodgers, people focus on salary numbers and deferments and things like that, but the Dodgers are a great organization that’s running on all cylinders. They’re doing well in the draft. They’re doing well internationally. They make smart trades. They’re good at finding value on the margins. And they can sign major free agents,” Hoyer said at the Cubs convention. Ta.

“So I think focusing on the amount of money they spend does a disservice to an organization that operates at a very high level.”

Tom Ricketts compares Dodgers to Yankees of 30 years ago

Also at the Cubs convention, Cubs owner and chairman Tom Ricketts spoke about how Los Angeles has approached the task of building a “fortress,” noting a team full of superstars in all facets of the game. revealed his feelings.

“Obviously, the Dodgers have done a really great job of making good business decisions, making good player decisions,” Ricketts said. “And they built a fortress. It’s tough. But I don’t hate them one bit. The Yankees 30 years ago, things like that come and go.

The Dodgers’ recent success is arguably the biggest free agent draw in sports. They have won 11 of the past 12 National League West championships, winning the World Series twice during that time. With a better roster than the one in 2024, a dynasty like the Yankees of the 1990s could be born.
