Boise State surpassed BYU in the 2024 Third College Football Playoff rankings.
After Saturday night’s loss to Kansas, the Broncos moved up to 12th place, while the Cougars dropped eight spots to 14th. With Boise State in front of BYU, the Broncos will be the tentative No. 4 seed for the playoffs with two weeks left in the regular season.
Keep in mind that the top four conference champions will earn first round byes into the playoffs, and seeds No. 5 through No. 12 will play in first round games. Five conference champions are guaranteed a spot in the playoffs. BYU ranks highest among Big 12 teams in the latest Top 25, five spots ahead of Army, the top-ranked AAC team.
BYU has a great chance to bounce back from the Broncos in Week 13. The Cougars will visit No. 18 Arizona State in one of two big Big 12 games on the penultimate weekend. If BYU wins convincingly, it’s easy to imagine the committee moving BYU ahead of Boise State. After all, the committee moved BYU up three spots a week ago after the Cougars made a field goal with three seconds left to win 22-21 against Utah.
Other than the swap between BYU and Boise State, the only significant movement in the top 12 came at the expense of Tennessee. Georgia returned to the projected bracket with a 31-17 win over the Vols in Week 12. Tennessee is ranked No. 11 and is currently the first team eliminated from the College Football Playoff.
Two more rankings will be announced before the official and final rankings on Sunday, December 8th.
1st round bye
1. Oregon
2. Texas
3. Miami
4. Boise State
Boise State surpassed BYU in the rankings, moving Miami from the No. 4 seed to the No. 3 seed. However, the Hurricanes were surpassed by a top-25 Alabama team with 8 wins and 2 losses.
1st round combination
Ohio State No. 5 BYU No. 12
No. 11 Georgia vs. No. 6 Penn State
10th Ole Miss, 7th Indiana
No. 9 Alabama vs. No. 8 Notre Dame
Once again, the Big Ten is scheduled to host three first-round games. For now anyway. That will likely change next week when Indiana visits Ohio State on Saturday. Oregon State has qualified for the Big Ten Championship Game, and the winner of Saturday’s top-five showdown will have a huge advantage in the race to join the Ducks in Indianapolis.
Alabama leads the SEC’s big-team teams with a win over Georgia. Ole Miss, which defeated Georgia in Week 11, is one spot ahead of the Bulldogs. Tennessee is off the field despite defeating Alabama. If six teams tie for first place in the SEC at 6-2, the committee’s rankings after the team that wins the SEC title game will be interesting.
