Apple Cider Vinegar is streaming on Netflix – Wellness Scam that Deceived the World

Netflix’s latest limited series, Apple Cider Vinegar, delves into the shocking true story of Belle Gibson, an Australian dishonest influencer who falsely claimed to have cured a (manufactured) brain tumor through alternative medicine . The six-episode drama not only exposes the risks of social media-fueled wellness scams, but also highlights the vulnerability of navigating serious illnesses within flawed healthcare systems.

story

At the heart of Apple Cider Vinegar is Bell Gibson played by Caitlyn Dever, a young woman who manipulates social media to gain fame and fortune by promoting diet-based cancer treatments. It’s Gibson. The series chronicles her journey from a struggling teenage mother and telemarketer to a prominent wellness influencer whose fraudulent claims have been amplified by large supporters. Her app The Pantry was featured in Apple’s 2015 watch launch before her deception was unraveled.

Alongside Bell’s Deception, the series follows two women, Mira (Alycia Debnam-Carey) and Lucy (Tilda Cobham-Hervey). Skeptical of traditional treatments, Mira is convinced that her juicing and detoxification regimen will heal her. Lucy, on the other hand, receives strict medical treatment, but finds she’s emotionally and physically drained, and is more susceptible to Bell’s pseudo-scientific promises. Their intertwined narrative is a stark contrast between real-life struggles and Bell’s opportunistic fraud.

Acute criticism of misinformation

The series effectively criticizes the unconfirmed impact of social media in spreading medical misinformation. Through engaging performances and inspiring dialogue, Apple Cider Vinegar portrays Bell as a master manipulator who understands the power of Instagram but underestimates the consequences of her lies. The show’s time hopping story, although sometimes unnecessary, builds tension when it piece together Bell’s rise with the inevitable downfall.

Lucy’s husband Justin (Mark Coles Smith) and Bell’s former friend and manager Chanel (Aisha Dee) play an important role in exposing Bell’s fraud. Their efforts underscore the importance of accountability in digital landscapes where influencers often escape scrutiny.

Warning Stories for the Digital Age

Beyond Bell’s deception, Apple Cider Vinegar resonates on a deeper level, demonstrating the despair and vulnerability of individuals facing life-threatening illnesses. The series highlights the need for a caring but evidence-based health care system that does not alienate patients to seek dangerous alternatives.

With engaging storytelling and much-needed criticism of wellness culture, Apple Cider Vinegar stands as a warning story about the dangers of blindly trusted social media influencers, especially when it comes to health and medicine. It’s an eye-opening watch and is just as infuriating as it is needed in today’s misinformation-driven world.

The Power of Social Media – The early days of Instagram and how it brings about unidentified effects, can have disastrous consequences.

We analyze why we lie and the way we hope – human behavior, the emotional gaps left behind by traditional medicine, and why individuals rely on alternative health movements.

Is Apple Cider Vinegar true story?

The series is inspired by real events, but is a fictional work with dramatized characters and situations. Exploring the psychological and social dynamics behind the scandal requires creative freedom.
