US Vice President JD Vance warned global leaders and tech CEOs at the Paris Summit on Artificial Intelligence on Tuesday (February 11, 2025) that “overregulation” would kill the rapidly growing AI industry. did.

On his first foreign trip as vice president, Vance also said the Trump administration “ensures that AI systems developed in the United States are free from ideological bias,” and the US said, “We are the ones who have said that “It will never limit citizens’ rights to free speech.” . ”

“At this moment, we are facing an extraordinary outlook for a new industrial revolution, comparable to the invention of steam engines,” Vance said. ”But it never goes through. If overregulation prevents innovators from taking the risks they need to advance the ball.”

Vance’s speech challenges Europe’s regulatory approach to artificial intelligence and Europe’s regulatory approach to content moderation on large technology platforms, highlighting the differences between the US and its allies regarding AI governance.

The summit brought together world leaders, top technology executives and policymakers to discuss the impact of AI on security, economics and governance.

The differences were publicly shown at the summit. Europe is looking to regulate and invest, China is expanding access through state-backed tech giants, and the US is defending a handoff approach under President Donald Trump.

Among the well-known attendees is China’s Deputy Prime Minister Zhang Guoqing, reflecting Beijing’s interest in creating global AI standards.

Vance is an outspoken critic of Europe’s content moderation policy. He suggested that the US should rethink NATO’s commitment if the European government imposes restrictions on Elon Musk’s social media platforms. His visit to Paris is expected to include candid discussions about Ukraine, the role of AI in the global power shift, and US tensions.

Concerns about the potential dangers of AI have loomed at the summit, particularly as states tackle ways of regulating technologies that are increasingly intertwined with defense and war.

“I think one day we have to find a way to control AI, or we’ll lose all control,” said Admiral Pierre Vandier, NATO commander who oversees the alliance’s modernization efforts. Ta.

Beyond diplomatic tensions, a global public-private partnership called “Current AI” has been launched, aimed at supporting large-scale AI initiatives in public goods.

Analysts see this as an opportunity to offset the control of private companies in AI development. However, it remains unclear whether the US will support such efforts.

Separately, the high stakes fight over AI Power is escalating in the private sector.

A group of investors led by Musk, who now leads Trump’s government efficiency, has placed a $97.4 billion bid to buy the nonprofit behind Openai. Openai CEO Sam Altman attending the Paris Summit quickly rejected X’s offer.

Beijing denounced western efforts to limit access to AI tools on Monday, Chinese company Deepseek’s new AI chatbot urges calls in the US Congress and limits usage over security concerns I urged him to do so. China is promoting open source AI and claims that accessibility ensures the benefits of global AI.

French organizers hope that the summit will encourage investment in the European AI sector and position the region as a reliable candidate for an industry shaped by US-China competition.

French President Emmanuel Macron, who is dealing with AI’s energy needs, contrasts with France’s nuclear-driven approach and dependence on fossil fuels, Quipping: France is not a “drill, baby, drill,” but “plugs” , baby, plug.”

Vance’s diplomatic tour will continue in Germany, attending the Munich Security Conference, reporting on European allies and increasing his commitment to NATO and Ukraine. He may also meet with Ukrainian President Voldymir Zelensky.

Vance will discuss Ukraine and the Middle East about lunch with Macron.

Like Trump, he questions our aid to Kiev and his broader Western strategy for Russia. Trump has pledged to end the war in Ukraine within six months of taking office.

Vance will meet separately with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and European Commission’s Ursula von der Leyen.
