President Donald Trump said negotiations to end the Ukrainian war would begin “quickly” after making a “long and productive” call with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday morning.
The call, the first known conversation since Trump took office last month, comes as it makes clear to his advisers who want to lead the Ukrainian conflict to a quick end.
Trump administration officials said Tuesday that prisoners hope to portray new efforts to end the war, which is about to enter its fourth year.
Now, the outline of Trump’s settlement plan is becoming more clearer as the two leaders resume communication after a long silence between the White House and the Kremlin.
In reading the conversation posted on Truth Social, Trump said:
“We agreed to work very closely, including visiting each other’s countries, and we also agreed to start negotiations with each team immediately. We called Ukrainian President Zelenkisee. And start by letting him know the conversation.
Both Washington and Moscow suggested that men would take on a reconciliatory tone in their account of their appeal.
“President Putin even used my very powerful campaign motto: the “common sense.” Trump wrote, suggesting that a former KGB agent on the other side of the line had carefully chosen his words to appeal to the US leader.
The Kremlin said Trump and Putin spoke for nearly 90 minutes.
Trump has been making weeks of informing him of his desire to talk to Putin as he works to resolve the conflict in Ukraine.
This week, as American officials travelled in Europe, they began to take a more clearer position on what the end of the Ukrainian War would look like. Speaking to a meeting in Brussels, Defense Secretary Pete Hegses said it is unrealistic for Kyiv to join NATO and that the US will no longer prioritize the safety of Europe and Ukraine.
Meanwhile, Trump spoke about hitting a contract with Ukrainian Zelensky for access to America’s precious rare earth minerals as a payment for America’s ongoing payments for America’s precious rare earth minerals.
Trump spoke with Putin to Zelensky’s noon shortly after he got off the phone.
His predecessor, President Joe Biden, had not spoken to his Russian counterpart for nearly three years.
The last US president to visit Russia was Barack Obama in 2013, who attended the G20 summit. President Putin last visited the United States in 2015 and attended a UN speech.
Steve Witkov, who will be one of the top negotiators on Trump’s conflict, was mistakenly detained on Wednesday as “showing what the possibilities are” for the future of Russian war in Ukraine. – Pointed out Vogel’s release.
“I think it’s a sign of what the future holds for the working relationship between President Trump and Putin, and that’s a sign of what the world can do for conflict and so on. I think they had great friendships and I think it will continue for now, and that’s really good for the world,” he said.
Witkov met Putin personally while in Moscow on Tuesday, two sources familiar with the meeting told CNN.
