Middle East report raises tensions
A report from the Middle East has caused a stir, citing statements from several leaders of Imran Khan’s political party, the PTI, which they claim is receiving support from President Donald Trump’s administration. It is expected that pressure will mount on the Pakistani military and the government of President Shehbaz Sharif to release Imran Khan in the near future. PTI core committee members said continued protests from party supporters and signals from President Trump indicate such pressure is likely.
Shehbaz Sharif government’s response
Rana Sanaullah, political advisor to Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, said: “We will never accept pressure from the US or any other government, even when it comes to the release of Imran Khan. If so, we will consider it an intrusion into Pakistan’s internal affairs. We will not work under the influence of Donald Trump.”
Why is the situation escalating?
Imran Khan is considered a supporter of Donald Trump. Under the influence of the Biden administration, Shehbaz Sharif took significant actions against Imran Khan, raising concerns in the United States as Sharif’s ties with China became clearer. Sharif is seen as being close to America’s adversaries, China and Iran, which worries Washington. .
