Clash between conflicting visions
The Tesla factory in Germany has been controversial since it began operations in March 2022. Among the issues reported by trade union IG Metall are safety concerns and heavy workloads for its 12,000 employees, many of whom feel they are “robots rather than humans.” According to an investigation by the German magazine Stern.
Furthermore, in March 2024, there was an act of sabotage of Tesla’s power grid claimed by the far-left activist group Vulcan Group, which halted production for nearly a week. In May, more than 800 activists staged a week-long protest near the factory, combining direct action with workshops and environmental group meetings.

As a result, Grunheide Forest became a flashpoint for a broader conflict between competing visions. One is the promise of rapid industrial expansion and a “global green transition” promoted by billionaires like Elon Musk. The other is localized resistance that advocates socio-ecological alternatives. It is unclear where this battle will end.
However, one thing is clear. Evicting the activists has not silenced the resistance. Just three days after the operation, opponents of Tesla’s expansion plans organized a symbolic “walk in the forest” featuring activist and member of the European Parliament Carola Rakete. She highlighted global stakes and warned of Musk’s growing influence, especially given his role in the incoming US administration of Donald Trump.

Rakete called for sustained resistance to Tesla as part of a broader confrontation with global power relations.
Grunheide Forest now stands as a symbol that transcends borders and intertwines local, national and global issues in the fight against climate injustice and unchecked industrial expansion.
