“IAF lost fighter jets to pack due to political leadership constraints”: Indian defense attacher

At the Indopack air combat seminar, Captain (In)Shiv Kumar admitted, saying, “We agree that we have lost some aircraft.” The Indian Embassy in Jakarta said, “The presentation conveyed that, unlike several other countries in our neighborhood, the Indian military would serve under civilian political leadership.”

New Delhi: The Indian Air Force lost a fighter jet to Pakistan on the night of May 7, 2025, targeting a Pakistan terror-linked site.

Seminar”Analytical Air Force Battles in Pakistan and India and Indonesia’s predicted strategy From an Air Force perspective“It was organized by the University of Dilgantara Marsekar Suryadharma in Indonesia on June 10th. In a 35-minute presentation at the seminar, Captain (In) Shiv Kumar admitted, “We may not agree that we have lost so many aircraft, at the previous Indonesian chairman’s claim), but we agree that we have lost some aircraft.”

In the early stages of air combat, the IAF suffered losses at the hands of the Pakistani army. Pakistani officials allegedly shot down six Indian jets, including Rafales, but Indian authorities refused to specify numbers, only confirming the losses of some aircraft.

General Anil Chauhan, chief of the Department of Defense, later said in Singapore that the real problem was not the number of Jets lost, but why were they lost: “The key thing is that the jets aren’t down, but why are they down,” he said in an interview with Bloomberg.

“After the loss, we changed our tactics and went to military facilities. So we first achieved enemy air defense control, so all attacks can be easily passed using Brahmos missiles,” the Indian defense added. He appeared to be referring to the Indian attacks at various air bases in Pakistan on May 10, 2025.

The view of India’s defense attachment highlights important factors. The IAF fighter jets were operated under strict political orders from the Modi government to not target Pakistan’s military facilities or air defense systems. This voluntary government restrictions were aimed at preventing escalation of conflict in the nuclear environment. Perhaps it was based on the premise that when India was not bumping into Pakistan’s military targets, the Pakistani forces would not target Indian fighters flying through Indian space.

Pakistan refused to impose such restrictions, and as its deputy chief argued, the chief of the Pakistan Air Force changed the order from Deter to Destroy after the IAF sent its ammunition to Pakistani terrorist sites. This led to the loss of the IAF fighter jet. Because political orientation meant that the IAF had to carry out its mission, intentionally avoiding threatening enemy assets.

Recognizing the tactical disadvantage, Indian military leaders quickly adjusted their approach. Within a few days, the IAF revised its tactics and attacked Pakistani targets on May 10, 2025 using the mission to use Bluffmos and other missiles that could be fired from longer distances.

Meanwhile, the Indian Embassy in Jakarta, Indonesia has issued a statement saying its captain. Kumar’s statements have been “out of context.” Here’s the statement:

“We have seen media coverage of the defensive attack presentation at seminars.

His statements are taken from the context, and media coverage is a false representative of the intention and thrust of the speaker’s presentation.

This presentation conveyed that unlike several other countries in our neighborhood, the Indian military will serve under civilian political leadership.

It was also explained that the purpose of Operation Sindore was to target terrorist infrastructure, and India’s response was non-escalated.
