The United Arab Emirates, known for the gorgeous cities of Dubai and Abu Dhabi, have begun mapping air taxi and cargo drone air corridors, the Civil Aviation Authority said in a statement Thursday.

The oil- and gas-rich country began testing two-seater propeller-top flight taxis built by German Borocopter in 2017, trying to distinguish itself in the Middle East as a high-tech, positive society.

In September, US-based Air-Casi Maker Joby Aviation said he applied for a certificate that would allow commercial air transport to operate in the UAE.

“Air corridor mapping for pilots and autonomous air taxis and drones is an important milestone that allows for a seamless implementation of advanced air mobility into the infrastructure of the UAE.”

UAE’s civil aviation authorities said aviation corridors and regulations have been set to be defined within the next 20 months.

The official UAE news agency WAM reports that air taxis are expected to begin flying in 2026.

Authorities say the Civil Aviation Administration is working with Abu Dhabi-based Global Advanced Technology Research Centre and Aspire, the UAE’s research and development funding organization, to develop the mapping.

It will be released on February 14th, 2025 at 4:23pm
