The Missile Defense Agency (MDA) today awarded Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) a subsequent development agreement for the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) weapons system. This unknown delivery/indefinite amount (IDIQ) agreement supports the continued development of the capabilities of the THAAD weapon system over the next five years. If both options are exercised, the contract cap is $2.8 billion. This development will promote Thaad’s capabilities against increasingly complex missile threats.

“The THAAD Interceptor, with its proven combat, is an effective deterrent against the threat of various ballistic missiles and is pleased to continue its capabilities for current and future customers.” Lockheed Martin missiles and fires With control. “THAAD is an important part of our missile defense construction and this vote of trust from the MDA strengthens our commitment to jointly provide enhanced defensive capabilities against the threat of emerging missiles.”

This latest contract is built on the current capabilities of the weapons system in accordance with the THAAD Advanced Capability Development agreement awarded in 2012. The scope of the development project is outlined through individual task orders during the performance period.

THAAD provides highly effective and combat-proven missile defense against the threat of short, medium, mid-band ballistic missiles. The THAAD weapon system demonstrated 17 complete flight test records for 17 intercepts. 16 of these intercepts used the THAAD interceptor. The THAAD weapon system successfully integrated with the PAC-3 MSE interceptor by firing and controlling the PAC-3 MSE and intercepting ballistic missile targets.
