Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, plans to spend up to $65 billion in 2025 to dramatically expand its artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure, CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced.
Underlying capital expenditures represent a significant increase from the company’s $38 billion spending in 2024. Zuckerberg aims to position Meta as a leading AI technology developer. Over 1.3 million graphics processing units (GPUs) by the end of the year.
The investment comes days after President Donald Trump announced the Stargate initiative. This is a $500 billion AI infrastructure project backed by Openai, Softbank, and Oracle. Zuckerberg’s announcement is widely seen as a strategic response to maintain meta’s competitive edge in artificial intelligence.
The company plans to significantly expand its AI workforce and develop internal “AI engineers” who can contribute to R&D coding tasks. Zuckerberg expects Meta’s AI assistant to serve more than 1 billion people in 2025, up from about 600 million active users last year.
