Next week’s must-see TV series on Netflix and Apple TV+

I’m not going to be heavy-handed with it. The streaming TV situation is basically terrible right now, with very few worthwhile new series coming out in the next few days. It seems like the big streamers are gearing up and preparing to release their next big releases as early as February. Thankfully, however, there are at least two notable exceptions next week. That’s what this post is all about.

The two series I’m claiming will save the day next week include Apple TV+’s new drama Prime Target starring Leo Woodall, set for release on January 22nd, and Netflix’s Prime Target, set for release on January 23rd. Includes Season 2 of The Night Agent. As for existing series that will be available to watch next week, you can also get new episodes of Apple’s Severance (season 2 finally returned last night. You can read my recap of the premiere episode. Hello Mr. Kobel, here is).

Let’s start with the new releases coming next week (January 19-25). The first of the new Apple series feels a little like something like the action-oriented Good Will Hunting.

Prime Target stars Leo Woodall as a bright young math graduate student on the verge of making his breakthrough. He is close to discovering the pattern of prime numbers that (probably) holds the key to all the world’s computers. Naturally, he ends up in the orbit of an NSA agent played by Quintessa Swindell, as an unseen enemy seeks to crib his bright ideas. She is given the task of monitoring and reporting on the mathematician’s actions, and together they begin to unravel the troubling conspiracy at his heart.

Meanwhile, the next day, Netflix releases the second season of one of its biggest and most heart-pounding action series.

The Night Agent TV series, based on the 2019 novel of the same name by Matthew Quirk, is a political thriller about a junior FBI agent named Peter Sutherland who becomes embroiled in a complex web of danger and intrigue. Netflix explains: “The new episodes pick up after the intense events of Season 1. Peter’s efforts to save the President are successful and he now earns the opportunity to become a Night Agent. In Season 2, Peter works for the secret organization Night Action. Peter is thrust into a world full of danger and short on trust.

In addition to these two series, don’t forget about episode 2 of the new season of Severance, as mentioned above. It will be released on Thursday evening, January 23rd. All three series mentioned here offer something for everyone and thankfully can save you a pretty slow week when it comes to new streaming releases.
