Peru sacked veteran coach Jorge Fossati on Thursday after he failed to rebuild their ill-fated bid to reach the 2026 World Cup finals.
Fossati, 74, a former Uruguay and Qatar manager, was appointed in December 2023 after Peru picked up just two points from six qualifying games under coach Juan Reynoso.
At the time, they were at the bottom of the South American qualifiers in 10th place, but they currently remain in this position with seven points from 12 games.
“Jorge Fossati will not continue his duties as coach of the Peruvian national team,” the Peruvian Football Federation announced.
The team currently has 17 points with six rounds left, far from the 6th place in the final qualifying round held by Paraguay.
South American qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup will resume in March in the United States, Mexico and Canada.
