Star batsman Virat Kohli was named in Delhi’s provisional 22-man squad for the upcoming Ranji Trophy match against Saurashtra (Rajkot), but his illness was revealed to be mild and his participation was ruled out. There are still doubts. It is learned that Kohli had hinted to Delhi District Cricket Association (DDCA) officials that he injured his neck during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test against Australia in Sydney. He received treatment from a physiotherapist there, but it is currently unclear whether he will be able to play in the Ranji matches starting on January 23.

Whether he will play or fly to Rajkot for a few days of training will be clear only after explaining his position in detail to DDCA chairman Rohan Jaitley.

Kohli last played a red-ball match for Delhi in 2012 against Uttar Pradesh in Ghaziabad. A year later, the legendary Sachin Tendulkar played his last Ranji Trophy match against Haryana at Lahri.

Talismanic wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant, who will be playing in a Ranji Trophy match for the first time in nearly seven years, has reportedly declined the captaincy, leaving Ayush Badni to continue in the role. Become.

“Rishabh felt that the current captain (Badoni) should continue to lead the team. He feels that he should not play around with leadership as he is not always available,” said the DDCA apex council. A member of the association spoke to PTI on condition of anonymity.

“When he was offered the captaincy, he said he was very happy to play under Badoni. “We selected 22 players, including five Under-23 players, and on January 25th I will be heading to Bhilai for the CK Nayudu U-23 match against Chhattisgarh starting from,” he added.

The BCCI has made it mandatory for all centrally contracted cricketers to play domestic cricket unless there is a compelling reason to skip duty.

The board has warned that any violation could lead to sanctions including deduction of points from central contract holders and ban from playing in the Indian Premier League.

Some of the big names already confirmed to play in the next match against Ranji include Yashasvi Jaiswal, who will represent Mumbai, and Shubman Gill, who will represent Punjab in the next round.
