Bhubaneswar: On his first visit to Odisha by a head of state, Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam will arrive in the state on Friday for a two-day itinerary.
Accompanied by a nine-member delegation comprising leaders from business and leading academic institutions, the President’s engagement included Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi with the aim of strengthening economic ties and exploring mutual opportunities between Singapore and Odisha. The Memorandum of Understanding between the State Government’s Skills Development and Technical Education (SD&TE) Department and ITE Education Services Singapore (ITEES) is designed to further strengthen Singapore’s skills development ecosystem, with Mr Thurman and Mazihi at the World Skills Center here. “This Memorandum of Understanding formally expresses the intention to expand cooperation in the field of technical and vocational education and training (TVET). We will intensify our support for expansion of World Skills Center in Bhubaneswar in various areas such as,” they said.
Other areas of cooperation with the island nation include artificial intelligence (AI), aerospace technology, avionics, marine engineering, retail, electronics, semiconductors, and renewable energy.
Support for the establishment of the World Center for Information Technology (WCIT) and Information Technology Enabled Services (ITES) in areas such as cybersecurity, cloud computing, blockchain, Internet of Things, and data services will be determined during the discussion process.
Knowledge support for the establishment of Regional Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) across the state will be part of the agreement, with a focus on strengthening capacity, introducing new trade and strong industry engagement. The memorandum of understanding will be valid for five years from January 17, 2025, according to officials.
Majhi is scheduled to visit President Thurman on Friday. After receiving briefings from state government officials, Mr. Thurman will visit the World Skills Center where he will sign a memorandum of understanding.
On Saturday, Mr. Tharman will visit the Sun Temple in Konark and later in the afternoon he will visit Bharat Biotech’s vaccine manufacturing unit in Info Valley II.
