J.D. Vance was admitted to the hospital Friday for minor sinus surgery after attending the Senate swearing-in ceremony.

Vice President-elect J.D. Vance attended the Senate swearing-in ceremony on Friday and was hospitalized for minor sinus surgery. According to FOX News, the surgery took place at George Washington Hospital in Washington.

“The Vice President-elect will undergo a long-planned minor sinus surgery,” Vance spokesperson William Martin said in a statement to The Hill. He confirmed that he would return to work the day after the surgery.

Vance becomes the youngest vice president of the United States after Richard Nixon

The medical surgery comes just weeks before Vance’s inauguration as vice president, scheduled for Jan. 20 with President-elect Donald Trump.

Once inaugurated, Vance, 40, will become the youngest vice president of the United States since Richard Nixon, who took office at the same age in 1953.

Before being hospitalized, Vance attended the Senate and met with new Republican senators Bernie Moreno of Ohio and Dave McCormick of Pennsylvania to take the oath of office. Mr. Vance expressed his support for both senators on social media and offered his congratulations to both senators. “I was proud to stand with (Sen. Bernie Moreno) and (Sen. Dave McCormick) when they were sworn in to the U.S. Senate.”

Mr. Vance currently serves in the Ohio State Senate, but a date for his resignation has not yet been announced. Following his resignation, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine will name an interim replacement. The temporary appointment will remain in effect until a special election in November decides who will serve the remainder of Vance’s term, which ends in 2028.

Will Vance’s surgery affect his chances of becoming vice president of the United States?

Vance’s recent surgery is unlikely to hinder his chances of becoming vice president. His swift return to work suggests a smooth recovery, allowing him to keep to his impending inauguration schedule.

Mr. Vance was all smiles as he stood a few feet away from U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris, who administered the oath to Mr. Moreno and other senators, including one in which she uttered the Pledge of Allegiance. It also included scenes where mistakes were made.

Neither Harris nor Vance interacted with each other, but both smiled and greeted the newly sworn-in senators.
