Heavy snow, black ice, freezing rain and strong winds are expected to hit the country from Saturday night into Sunday, the German Weather Service (DWD) said.

The wintry weather is partly due to a low-pressure system that is already wreaking havoc in the UK.

National carrier Lufthansa warned that bad weather could disrupt flights in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

Airport operator Fraport announced on its website that flight cancellations and delays are expected at Frankfurt Airport, Germany’s largest hub airport.

Heavy snow and black ice expected

According to DWD, the area between the Black Forest, Lake Constance and the Bavarian Forest is at risk of black ice. Black ice is particularly dangerous for road users because it is difficult to spot and can be very slippery.

Snow fell overnight in the lower western mountains, with up to 10 centimeters (4 inches) of snow possible within hours, before turning to freezing rain, DWD said.

Frigid conditions continue, with temperatures dropping to -8°C (17,6°F) in some areas.

Strong winds of up to 100km/h are expected in mountainous areas.

Weather warnings in place for parts of the UK and US

The Met Office has issued two amber warnings and two amber warnings for heavy snow and freezing rain across most parts of the UK on Saturday and Sunday.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said vehicles stranded on roads, rail and air services delayed or canceled and power outages likely to occur as the country faces a week of winter conditions. Up to 30 centimeters of snow is expected to fall in some areas.

More than 55 million people are facing a dangerous storm that will bring frigid temperatures to the eastern United States into Monday, with the National Weather Service warning of blizzard conditions from the Central Plains to the Mid-Atlantic.

Winter storm warnings or advisories have been issued from the northwest Rocky Mountains of Montana to the coastal states of Maryland, Delaware and Virginia.
