What's behind Apple's 'allergy' to Nvidia, the world's largest and most successful AI chip company?

While Apple has joined the ranks of tech giants integrating AI capabilities into its devices, reports say the company is quietly pursuing a strategy to reduce its dependence on Nvidia, a leading provider of GPUs essential for AI development. The book says: Now, like many other companies in the industry, Apple is taking steps to reduce its dependence on Nvidia, citing an “allergy” despite relying on the chipmaker’s technology.
Unlike other tech giants that are hoarding Nvidia’s GPUs, Apple primarily rents access to its GPUs through cloud providers, The Information reports.
“Rather than buying large quantities of Nvidia chips like its peers, the iPhone maker primarily rents access to Nvidia chips from cloud providers like Amazon and Microsoft. In some cases, for example, training the largest models “To do this, Apple rents Al chips designed in-house by Google, not Nvidia,” the report states.

What is Apple’s “allergy” to Nvidia?

Apple’s move to break away from Nvidia appears to be rooted in both financial considerations and Apple’s desire for technological autonomy in its products, the report said.
“Apple’s Nvidia allergy stems in part from the company’s frugality and desire to own and control key technical elements of its products to avoid giving others influence over its business. It seems like there is,” he added.
“However, Apple’s internal leaders have been quietly harboring a grudge against Nvidia for nearly two decades, stemming from business disputes dating back to when Steve Jobs was Apple’s CEO. The report said it cited 10 former Apple and Nvidia employees with direct knowledge of the incident. relationship.

Apple considers partnership with Broadcom to design AI chips

The report said the most significant development in Apple’s pursuit of independence was its partnership with Broadcom to develop its own AI server chips.
“And in its boldest move yet to avoid dependence on Nvidia, Apple is working with Broadcom to design Al server chips that are expected to be ready for production by 2026.” .
This chip’s network technology is said to be extremely important for Al processing. If Apple succeeds with the Al chip, internally code-named “Baltra,” it would be a significant milestone for the company’s silicon team, the magazine said.
