Two-time Oscar winner Monga Kapoor is spending more than the film’s budget on a campaign to secure an Oscar nomination for her film Anuja.

She is also planning distribution and her next project starring Ayushmann Khurrana and Sara Ali Khan is expected to be announced in January 2025.

Mr. Kapoor sees a resurgence of independent producers in the evolving Indian film industry and is confident that they will regain prominence.

What’s the story?

Guneet Monga Kapur, executive producer of the short film Anuja, revealed that the project’s fundraising efforts exceeded its actual budget.

The film, about child labor in New Delhi, has been shortlisted for the 2025 Academy Award for Best Live-Action Short Film.

In an interview with Mid-Day, Monga Kapoor revealed her continued efforts to secure more funding and take Anuja to the next round.

Monga Kapoor’s dedication to earn Oscar nomination for ‘Anuja’

Two-time Academy Award winner Monga Kapoor (The Elephant Whisperer and Period) is working hard to get Anuja nominated for an Oscar. She has been spending her time making calls and reaching out to people to further promote Anuja.

She is also working on distribution plans, determining the best platform for the film’s release.

She reflected on past projects and future plans

Monga Kapoor also spoke about her other projects ‘Kill’ and ‘Gyaarah Gyaarah’ and said that they were incredibly fulfilling.

Although she was initially skeptical of Kill’s appeal, the team was determined to create it in its most authentic form.

Talking about her future plans, Monga Kapoor revealed that her next project will feature Ayushmann Khurrana and Sara Ali Khan and a big announcement will be made in January 2025.

Monga Kapoor’s views on the evolving role of producers

The filmmaker also shared his observations on the changing landscape of film production in India.

She highlighted the resurgence of independent producers, which have proven their resilience over time.

While acknowledging that the role of producers is often underestimated, she expressed confidence that now is the time to regain prominence in the industry.
