Google Search AI overview, testing new Gemini animations

Google is testing a new Gemini-aligned loading animation for AI in Search that’s flashier and bolder than its current approach.

When loading, the AI summary first displays “Searching…”, then switches to “Generating…”, and a blue text line appears just before the text is entered. Gemini Shine + “AI Overview” or Beaker + “Search Labs | Search Labs | If you are in the beta program, see AI Overview.

Google is currently testing new animations in Search Labs. This animation immediately displays “Generating…” in the top left corner, followed by “Looking this up” at the bottom of the page, and then “Putting it all together.” There are blue and purple spotlights pulsating within the rectangular container, making a clearer connection between AI Overview and Gemini. A similar glow appears around the Gemini overlay on Android and Gemini Live.

The label at the top says “Generative AI is experimental,” which harkens back to the early days of AI Overview.

This could just be a new animation, but one possibility is that the new look matches Gemini 2.0. Earlier this month, the company began testing a new model for AI overview in search. Google says Gemini 2.0’s “advanced inference capabilities” will help AI Overviews “tack on more complex topics and multi-step questions, including advanced formulas, multimodal queries, and coding” and will be available “early next year.” “This will enable broader deployment.” That would explain the badge and why it seems slightly slower than stable.

There have been some reports about this new animation, but it is not yet available to all users.
