How do you unravel the life of a creative and unpredictable performer like Steve Martin? Divided into two distinct halves. Morgan Neville pulls off a fun trick with this Apple series that’s actually like two feature-length documentaries. The first uses archival footage to chart Martin’s rise to the top of the stand-up comedy food chain that he left behind when he was perhaps at his most popular. Swagger is Apple’s most underrated drama, a heartfelt and authentic family drama about a young man navigating the turbulent waters with the potential to become a sports superstar. The number of people who want a piece of the young man who seems like he might be the next LeBron James is staggering, and the show’s writers eschew melodrama in favor of truth.
