2024 has been nothing short of a roller coaster for the fashion world. It was an eclectic mix of iconic collaborations, trailblazing trends, and some heartbreaks that left an indelible mark. From Anita Dongre’s dreamy ‘Diwali Barbie’ collaboration to the buzz (and backlash) surrounding India’s Olympic uniform, this year has kept fashion lovers on their toes. This year has seen some ups and downs, with Indian designer Rahul Mishra partnering with luxury brand Tod’s and India bidding an emotional farewell to the Rohit Bal era.

7 Defining moments for Indian fashion in 2024

Take a look at eight defining moments that made 2024 a memorable year in style.

1. India x International: An important collaboration

The global presence of Indian fashion has been strengthened by several high-profile collaborations and international showcases. Rahul Mishra’s partnership with Tod’s and Anita Dongre’s ‘Diwali Barbie’ collaboration with Mattel exemplify this trend. Additionally, designers like Vaishali S have expanded their international footprint by opening stores in fashion capitals such as Paris.

2. High-profile weddings create new bridal trends

Lavish weddings such as Ambani and Merchant’s created lasting trends in bridal fashion. The fusion of traditional Gujarati customs with modern elegance showcased by bride Radhika Merchant influenced bridal couture, blending classic design with contemporary aesthetics. Whether it was the haute couture dress she wore for the pre-wedding festivities under the European sun or her Anamika Khanna Haldi ensemble paired with an authentic floral dupatta, we will remember everything about this wedding. It is engraved.

3. Olympic “fashion” disappointment

In 2024, renowned fashion designer Tarun Tahiliani faced huge criticism for designing the uniform for the Indian team at the Paris Olympics. The outfit, which features an ikat-inspired print, was labeled “cheap” and “tacky” by many on social media. Critics highlighted the use of digital prints and fabrics like polyester, arguing that India’s rich textile heritage deserves a more authentic representation.

Tahiliani defended his work, saying the design followed International Olympic Committee guidelines and was created within a tight three-week schedule. He also emphasized the practicality of the selected materials.

4. Sonam Kapoor in Dior

In October 2024, Bollywood actress Sonam Kapoor was appointed Dior’s brand ambassador, becoming the first South Asian to hold this prestigious position. Her association with Dior highlights the growing recognition of India’s influence in the global fashion world. Sonam’s collaboration with Dior Creative Director Maria Grazia Chiuri underscores the brand’s commitment to embracing diverse cultural aesthetics and resonates with India’s evolving luxury market.

5. Janhvi Kapoor says ‘Zendaya who’ on method dressing

Janhvi Kapoor’s ‘method dressing’ experiment during the promotions of Mr. and Mrs. Mahi was another perfect example of how fashion can complement and enhance a film’s narrative. In the film, where Janhvi plays a cricketer alongside Rajkummar Rao, her wardrobe choices are not only stylish but also reflect the character she embodies: dynamic, sporty, yet feminine. Ta.

6. India loses iconic Rohit Bal

Rohit Bal, one of India’s most famous fashion designers, passed away on November 1, 2024 at the age of 63, leaving an indelible mark on the industry. Known for his intricate designs that blend traditional Indian motifs with contemporary luxury, Balu’s work has adorned global celebrities and icons alike. His clients included not only Indian celebrities but also international celebrities such as Cindy Crawford, Pamela Anderson, and Uma Thurman.

Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) president Sunil Sethi said his death left an “everlasting vacuum in the fashion design world”.

7. Icon returns

The iconic Dimple Kapadia starred on the cover of Vogue magazine’s November-December issue, leaving everyone in awe. The 67-year-old actor looked absolutely breathtaking in the photo with minimal makeup and clearly visible wrinkles on her face as a statement. She looked flawless in her statement jewelry and that hair is incredibly gorgeous. All the photos released by fashion magazines were exquisite and stylish, giving a breath of fresh air.
