TIt’s time for me to introduce “Brady’s” again. This is a completely personal awards list for films released in the UK in the calendar year just past, and is quite different from the Guardian’s University Critics of the Year poll.

Twelve months have passed since AI refuses to go away, two small letters that meant nothing until recently, now a big worry that has given us shivers of anxiety . The conclusion of the writers’ strike should have established the primacy of creative humanity and the preservation of AI as a tool. But studios are keen to find efficient and profitable ways to leverage their intellectual property, and Lionsgate has in fact struck a deal with artificial intelligence company Runway to handle its back catalogue. Anxious thoughts. I, too, winced when I watched Alien: Romulus, a movie that used AI to bring back a very prominent British actor in a major role, and seemed very pleased with how clever this was. . What happened to originality?

Add to this the reappearance of last year’s panto villain, heartless corporate bee-counter and Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav in public, and the boos have gotten even louder. Last year, his studio was accused of scrapping the completed Batgirl movie for tax breaks. In hindsight, it appears to have disappointed 94-year-old Clint Eastwood, one of Warner Bros.’ most legendary names. His latest film as a director is a legal thriller called Juror #2, which Warner Bros. released in a small number of theaters. Appears on screen when preparing to dump to stream. Well, it’s not a masterpiece (although some critics seem to almost claim it is, mixing bravado and contrarianism). But it deserves a fair hearing.

This was also the year that Daniel Day-Lewis dramatically came out of retirement and was reported to be filming a movie directed by his son Ronan. This drama is a collaboration between the two and depicts the dynamic relationship between a father and son. It’s a high-risk adventure, but perhaps not as risky as some other feature films, and it’s great to have Day-Lewis back.

For me, 2024 wasn’t a vintage year for Hollywood or high-concept, high-prestige, luxury car star vehicles, but there was plenty of great work from other parts of the world if you were willing to look. . Great film by Alice Rohrwacher, Payal Kapadia, Sean Baker, Jane Schoenbrunn, and more. Here I will introduce the works I selected. As before, you can also comment on the winners and talk about the person or movie that should have won the award.
