A 13-year-old Indian expatriate boy based in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) sustained a serious eye injury while playing cricket in Dubai, but his eyesight has recently recovered.

The eighth-grade boy was playing with friends in a parking lot near his apartment when a cricket ball hit his left eye, causing pain, redness, and blurred vision.

Initially treated with ice packs, the boy’s symptoms worsened and his parents referred him to Aster Clinic Bur Dubai.

Dr. Ghazala Hasan Mansouri, an ophthalmologist at Astor Hospital Mankur, conducted a comprehensive examination and found that he had a giant retinal tear (GRT) and multiple retinal tears in his left eye.

She used advanced diagnostic tools such as OCT and fundus photography to diagnose a 90-degree retinal tear and recommended a laser procedure to seal the damage.

The boy underwent laser treatment using anesthetic eye drops to close the tear and retinal tear, and was discharged from hospital the same day, with follow-up tests confirming he had made a full recovery. Later, he regained his sight and returned to India.

Dr. Ghazala emphasizes the importance of early diagnosis and prompt intervention in the treatment of eye injuries, emphasizing the need to seek immediate professional treatment to prevent long-term complications.
