Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan makes new demands, calls for diaspora to stop sending money

LAHORE: Jailed former prime minister Imran Khan has announced yet another protest, this time a civil disobedience movement, asking the Pakistani diaspora to boycott remittances if their demands are not met by Sunday. Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party has launched several protests demanding his release, the latest in November 2024.
Khan, 72, raised two main demands in a lengthy post on his official X handle on Thursday. These include the release of political prisoners pending trial and the establishment of a judicial commission to transparently investigate the incidents of May 9, 2023 and November 26, 2024. Talks with the Shehbaz Sharif government at the federal level. “If these demands are not met by Sunday, a remittance boycott, the first stage of the civil disobedience movement, will be launched. , and I am appealing to you what is obvious to you.” And the media is being suppressed, and the era of repression and fascism continues. We therefore strongly advise you to start a boycott of remittances,” he said in the post.
Police arrested hundreds of PTI supporters who took part in protests on November 26, including a march into the capital Islamabad and a planned sit-in demonstration.
