Paramount Pictures is gearing up for Sonic the Hedgehog 4, with the studio expecting a spring 2027 release date for the latest installment in the family-friendly series.
The news comes as Sonic the Hedgehog 3 opens in theaters on Friday and is expected to top the box office with $55 million to $60 million from 3,800 theaters in North America. The sequel is shaping up to be a holiday hit for Paramount, so there’s interest in more Sonic adventures. Internationally, the film will be released in 52 markets on Christmas. Critics have also given the latest film high praise, giving Sonic the Hedgehog 3 an impressive 87% Fresh Score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Combined, the first two films grossed a total of $725.2 million at the global box office and generated more than $180 million in global consumer spending from home entertainment rentals and digital purchases. They also inspired the Paramount+ spinoff series “Knuckles,” which premiered earlier this year. Sonic the Hedgehog is based on Sega’s popular video game series that first appeared in 1991.
Jeff Fowler directed all three Sonic the Hedgehog films. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 sees the return of Jim Carrey as Sonic’s main antagonist, Dr. Ivo Robotnik, and Ben Schwartz as the titular speedster. Carrie pulls double duty in Part 3, also playing Ivo’s grandfather, Gerald Robotnik. The ensemble includes James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, Idris Elba, Coleen O’Shaughnessy, and Keanu Reeves, who plays Shadow the Hedgehog, another video game fan favorite.
Plot details for Sonic the Hedgehog 4 are, as you might expect, being kept under wraps.
