Patrick Mahomes’ ankle injury comes at an inopportune time for the Kansas City Chiefs, who are set to start the 2024 season at home in the playoffs.

Mahomes suffered the injury Sunday against the Cleveland Browns, but a few days later he complained about having to play three games in 11 days. NFL Network reported he suffered a mild high ankle sprain.

Matt Ryan, the former NFL MVP who led the Atlanta Falcons to the Super Bowl, said Monday that the Chiefs should rest Mahomes until the playoffs.

“If it were me, I would sit him. I think the most important thing is to get him healthy for the playoffs, but the ankle is tough,” he said on CBS Sports HQ. “I know he’s done it before in the playoffs and he came through it and played really well, but it’s a playoff game.

“If you look at this regular season, they have a two-game lead in the AFC and they’ve played those two games in a row. Maybe we’ll get him back in Week 18 and get a little bit of a rhythm going into the season. He won’t be able to play in the playoffs, but we’ll know the extent of the injury and how he recovers in the coming days.

“I have no hesitation in giving him some rest and making sure he’s healthy. In my opinion, if we want to make a run for a third Super Bowl, we need to keep him as fresh as possible.” there is.”

Mahomes has struggled with ankle injuries in the past.

In 2023, he had a playoff game left against the Jacksonville Jaguars. He played through a high ankle sprain as the Chiefs defeated the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LII.

It’s unclear what the Chiefs will do at this point. They have a game against the Houston Texans on Saturday before traveling on Christmas Day to face the Pittsburgh Steelers.
