The DCU just introduced Batman’s first villain, but has James Gunn already killed off one?

The DC Universe just introduced Batman’s first major villain to the franchise, but maybe they could have killed them off just as quickly. Creature Commandos kicks off the DCU for viewers, with the show serving as the opening for DCU Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters, and as a sort of prelude to the 2025 Superman movie and its July release date. It works. That being said, Creature Commandos did a great job of introducing many important characters from different areas of DC lore into the franchise early on.

In five episodes alone, the cast of Creature Commandos has expanded to include Circe (Wonder Woman’s famous villain) and technically a sizable portion of the DCU’s hero roster, but… The show’s heroes despite being shown to be dead in a theoretical dystopian future that Circe warns about. Creature Commandos Episode 5 also brings a prominent Batman villain to the forefront of the DCU, introducing the series’ first major member of the Dark Knight’s rogues gallery.

Creature Commando introduces DCU’s Clayface

Episode 5 of Creature Commandos introduced the DC Universe’s version of Clayface to the world, revealing that the villain was impersonating Ira MacPherson. Ira Macpherson, the woman who saw Circe’s vision of the future along with Amanda Waller, is actually already dead, and Clayface is probably a dead person. I replaced her in the scene with Isla in the previous episode.

Creature Commandos is scheduled to premiere on December 5, 2024 and run until January 9, 2024.

This is especially interesting considering Clayface is the DCU’s first notable Batman villain. For example, Doctor Phosphorus is also an antagonist of Batman in the comics, but he, like Clayface, is not on Batman’s main villain roster. He may not be known to many viewers as the comic book enemy of the Dark Knight. This is an interesting building block for the series as anticipation builds for Batman’s standalone film, The Brave and the Bold, but Clayface’s face at the end of the episode really sets things off in this regard. I’m sure it’s complicated.

Creature Commandos Episode 5 Looks to Kill Clayface

Clayface and Rick Flag Sr. fight in Creature Commando

In episode 5 of Creature Commandos, Rick Flag Sr. and Eric Frankenstein enter the house where they find Ira’s corpse and Clayface looking for answers to what’s going on. Naturally, this immediately leads to a fight between Clayface and the duo, showing off his powers and giving the series another dramatic fight scene.

Clayface unleashes quite a few attacks, and at one point it looks like he might be able to defeat both of his opponents, but he is ultimately defeated when Frankenstein blows himself and Clayface up with electrical wires. This causes the villain to explode and remain frozen on the floor.

So this episode certainly seems to hint at killing off Clayface right after introducing the Batman villain – especially the severe damage Clayface inflicts on Rick Flag Sr. Perhaps because it would be more justified on a narrative level if Clayface himself died in the conflict. This adds even more drama to the fight. That said, things may not be as simple as they seem given the specific villains being discussed.

Why the death of Clayface’s Creature Commando is not permanent

Scary Clayface in DC Comics

The fact that most other characters are essentially multi-rendered means that viewers can be very confident that whatever story they’re watching, they’ve just witnessed their eternal death. However, in the case of Clayface, things are a little less straightforward and dry, as his normal body composition means that things that would have undoubtedly killed others are more inconvenient for him.

In fact, there is precedent in the comics for Clayface coming back from a state of seeming doom, as well as storylines exploring the idea that Clayface’s form can be split into several different bodies. This is best evidenced by Katherine Carlo, who was created as a kind of daughter to Clayface. By Him, we therefore share in His power. With all this background in mind, it is possible that this version of Clayface was not, or failed to be, the only “body” of Clayface operating at the time, and that Clayface’s unique physiology is , it could mean that this seemingly fatal end result is just a temporary setback.

Considering the possibility of Batman facing off against Clayface in the DC Universe, either of these possibilities would allow for future Clayface storylines in the franchise rather than the character’s arc beginning and ending as soon as it begins. will also be valuable. Hopefully, future installments of Creature Command and other DC Universe projects will shed more light on Clayface’s fate, one way or another.

The DC Universe is one of the biggest comic book series and often competes with Marvel. DC Comics began as National Allied Publications in 1935, founded by Malcolm Wheeler Nicholson. Since then, the franchise has exploded with thousands of comic books, movies, TV shows, and video games. 2013 saw the start of the latest superhero saga, with Zack Snyder introducing Henry Cavill as Superman. After several films received mixed reviews, DC did a soft reboot under the direction of James Gunn and Peter Safran.
