Vice President Kamala Harris administered the oath to senators Friday as the 119th Congress convened. A video of Vice President-elect J.D. Vance laughing as Kamala Harris reads the oath has gone viral. Donald Trump Jr. also shared the video with a smiling emoji. But J.D. Vance probably didn’t mean to insult Kamala Harris, who clapped after she was sworn in. Harris was also seen smiling pleasantly as she faced off against Republicans after a fierce election campaign.
Harris’ role as vice president also includes duties as president of the Senate, including terminating relations and presiding over impeachment trials that do not involve a sitting president. This includes swearing in new senators so they can begin their terms.
Many of Kamala Harris’ Republicans who were sworn in today couldn’t pronounce her name, Time magazine headlined an article about today’s swearing-in.
JD Vance shared a photo from the swearing-in event, especially one that made him laugh. “I was proud to stand with @berniemoreno and @DaveMcCormickPA when they were sworn in to the U.S. Senate. Congratulations to them and all the new senators!” Vance wrote.
“As Vice President Kamala Harris arrived at the Capitol on Friday to swear in a new class of senators, many of the smiling politicians who handed her the family Bible told her that she had been a blackmailer for months. They will be the same politicians who have been telling the crowd that there will be. In social media, some people spent months falsely claiming in interviews that they wanted Christmas removed from the calendar, that they wanted to put dog meat on immigrants’ stoves, or that they wanted to rig the election. and are voting illegally,” the report said.
“This is an inelegant reality that every vice president faces in their role as president of the Senate, especially those who ran unsuccessfully for president, such as Harris, Al Gore, and Richard Nixon. Someone who had to come back for the last few selections. The former senators, all of whom have been struggling for weeks on Capitol Hill, can’t ignore the norms of the Senate to save their bruised egos, and that institutionalists can’t help the people. He understood that he could not avoid standing there with him. Who abandoned them is just part of the job, or at least that’s what they have to tell themselves,” the Time magazine report said.
