Why buy American?
Every time an American purchases an American-made product, a magnificent, waving American flag magically appears somewhere in the country (like in these Stars and Stripes photos). You know what else happens? A purchase is more than just a purchase. It’s an investment in the future of the American economy. That’s because when you buy, the demand for what you just bought increases. When demand increases prices, there is a corresponding increase in supply, more people need to work, and more money is available. When people spend money on things made in America, the cycle continues. If you’re spending on imported goods, the dollars you spend disappear with the purchase.
Think of it this way. Every $10 you spend on something made in America goes directly into that worker’s pocket. Then use it to pay your babysitter. The babysitter then uses it to buy gas. The cashier gives it as change to another person, who then uses it to pay for things like college textbooks. That $10 suddenly became worth more. Money continues to circulate in the economy, with hundreds of people using it to pay for the necessities we all need (like Independence Day decorations!). In other words, when you buy American-made, you help keep that money where it needs to be: in the hands of ordinary Americans. When you buy American products, you can actually make a big difference in the lives of your community and neighbors. Independence Day is one of the best Independence Day ideas, but patriotism isn’t just for Independence Day.
So if you really want to keep some of that money, it’s a good idea to consider efforts to support American businesses. You can see if the store you’re browsing has a “Made in America” or “Made in the USA” department or search feature, or look for small businesses.
