IIf there’s one fashion trend that sticks, it’s ribbons. From Christmas trees to hairstyles to all the “Pookie” symbolism, ribbons are everywhere. It has now become an indispensable hair accessory. Even celebrities can’t resist it. Alia Bhatt dressed up in red for the Christmas celebrations and had a stunning bow in her hair.
She’s not alone. Also worn by Malaika Arora Khan bright red ribbon recently. What’s interesting is that, unlike most fashion trends, the rise of ribbons as an “it” accessory hasn’t followed a “trickle down” route. From Sarojini Nagar to Khan Market, bows were already a street style staple long before celebrities started posting them on Instagram. The best part? You can also make your own, depending on how beautiful you want the ribbon knots to be.
Of course, much of the credit goes to Korean TV shows and movies. As K-dramas became popular among Indian audiences, they brought with them a love of cultural imports, especially all things “cute.” The ribbons worn in many of these K-dramas are one such fashion import.

Ribbons of all kinds are very “trendy”: satin and lace, printed and embroidered. Bowknot-themed nail art, sweaters, and even cakes are trending on Pinterest boards. It’s as if Beyoncé’s famous song, “If I love you, I should put a ring on it” could be reworked into “If I love you, I should put a bow on it.”
This is one fashion trend that has no age limit. Unlike the days of low-waisted jeans and leather and lace chokers, ribbons are for everyone. No matter the length or style of hair, women and other cute accessories fans of all ages are joining in and flaunting it. It’s about bringing out your inner child and celebrating cuteness – making age completely irrelevant.
People on Instagram “cash in” in a completely different way. A pink ribbon is placed on the forehead to acknowledge green-light behavior by a romantic partner, or a man in general. It’s a stark contrast to toxic masculinity.
I’m not talking about you, but for me, bowing represents a festive mood and also encourages self-love. That’s why everyone is tying ribbons on themselves and those around them, even on social media. You can update any look. Boring sweater? Attach a bow. It’s that simple. It doesn’t cost much.
This is the age of the bow, and we are living in that age.
