LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) – Technology is getting better every year, and so are scammers.
They are leveraging advances in artificial intelligence to distort and alter videos and images to successfully trick people into providing money or personal information.
Angela Guth from the Better Business Bureau explained some of the things we should be aware of.
“When you’re looking at social media, you see an image, and you wonder if there’s something wrong with the image, or maybe it’s just a little too good to be true. Maybe it’s blurry,” Gass said.
These scams are rampant across the country.
As we enter the holiday season, scammers try to lure us with misleading ads using altered images.
“We see a little bit more during the holiday season. It could be a dog you’re buying as a gift. It could also be an AI-generated image,” Gass said.
To avoid that, Gass proposed reverse image search. This technology allows users to search for information about images without using text.
If you see an image other than what you were trying to purchase, please report it.
The Better Business Bureau offers the following tips when deciphering whether an image is real.
- Look for typos
- Be careful of incorrect or outdated information
- Pay attention to repeated words and phrases
- When in doubt, look for another source.
Scammers are getting more and more sophisticated, so be extremely careful.
“If you notice a moment when something doesn’t feel right, stop immediately, hang up, and avoid further involvement. Stop what you’re doing and investigate before continuing,” Gass says. said.
