British Flag carrier British Airways (BA), will begin a strategic expansion of its maintenance capabilities by acquiring Boeing’s hangar facilities and MRO operations at London Gatwick Airport (LGW).

The purchase will establish British Airways Engineering Gatwick (BAEG) and will join existing engineering subsidiaries of South Wales (BAEW) and Glasgow (BAMG) airlines.

The transaction incorporates Boeing’s current workforce into BA’s operations, with employee transfers scheduled for the second quarter of 2024, following a mandatory consultation process.

This integration brings specialized aviation maintenance expertise and advanced facilities under the direct control of BAs, increasing the technical service capabilities of the airline.

British Airways is planning a critical recruitment initiative at its Gatwick facility, indicating a significant investment in engineering infrastructure.

This expansion strengthens Gatwick’s position as a critical engineering hub within BA’s network and complements existing line maintenance work at the airport.

The acquisition coincides with British Airways’ broader engineering expansion strategies, centralisation of maintenance capabilities and creating operational efficiency.

Boeing’s facility integration will strengthen the BA’s maintenance infrastructure, and airlines will deploy it to enhance technical support capabilities across the fleet.

British Airways’ technical director Andy best reviews the strategic importance of acquiring Boeing’s Gatwick facilities, highlighting the integration of specialized maintenance expertise and advanced hangar facilities in BA’s engineering portfolio. I’m doing it. This expansion will enhance the reliability of the BA’s fleet and improve customer service capabilities.

The acquisition strengthens British Airways’ commitment to Gatwick Airport through expanded maintenance operations. Best Best welcomes the relocation of Boeing’s licensed aircraft engineers.

The expanded Gatwick operation allows for continuous Boeing 777 minor maintenance while introducing heavy maintenance features of the A320/321. This expansion of operations reduces the requirements for aircraft ferries between maintenance bases and supports BA’s sustainability initiative with reduced positioning flights.
