Born on January 18, 1972 in Maharashtra, he was once hailed as a phenomenal talent due to his sensational start in international cricket. However, the former Indian cricketer’s international cricket career unfortunately did not last long. He was once compared to his childhood friend, the legendary Sachin Tendulkar, and seemed destined for great success in his career. Avid cricket fans will remember his historic partnership with Sachin Tendulkar, when they were still teenagers, when they scored 664 runs in the Harris Shield trophy. Vinod Kambli made his debut for India in 1991, two years after his friend Sachin Tendulkar. His Test debut came in 1993, when he scored two centuries in his first seven matches in the longest format of the game, and hit in consecutive matches. He scored a whopping 793 runs in seven Tests and his career graph looked like it would only go up from here. Unfortunately, he played just 17 Tests and scored 1084 runs. He played 104 ODIs for India, including the 1996 World Cup, and ended his career with 2477 runs in the 50-over format. On his 53rd birthday, let’s take a look at some of the records he still holds. #Vinod Kambli still holds the record for the fastest Indian to reach 1000 runs in Test cricket, achieving the feat in 14 innings.
#21 years 32 days old Vinod Kambli achieved this feat against England in 1993, becoming the youngest Indian to score two centuries in Test cricket.
#Vinod Kambli held the record for the fastest Asian to reach 1000 Test runs, but that record was broken by Sri Lanka’s Kamindu Mendis in 2024.
Interestingly, even though Vinod Kambli played only 17 Tests, his batting average (54.20) in Test cricket was still the highest by an Indian. Sachin Tendulkar’s average test score is 53.78.
The former Indian cricketer revealed in an interview that he suffered two heart attacks in 2013. Just recently, Vinod Kambli was seen having difficulty walking and was recently admitted to a hospital in Thane for treatment. It treats several health problems, including brain blood clots and urinary tract infections. On January 14, the former Indian cricketer, who was discharged from the hospital after completing treatment, was seen attending a gala ceremony where he was honored by the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA).
