vision
This advanced energy demonstration, set against the backdrop of a decommissioned coal-fired power plant in Kemmerer, Wyoming, aims to validate the design, construction, and operational features of a sodium system. Combining TerraPower and GE Hitachi technologies, the sodium reactor represents a breakthrough in clean and sustainable power generation. The project will bring online a modern, commercially capable nuclear reactor, providing carbon-free, reliable power to the grid and providing good-paying jobs in Wyoming for decades to come.
Main features
At the heart of the project is a 345 MWe sodium-cooled fast reactor combined with a molten salt-based energy storage system. This innovative energy storage technology allows the system to increase its output to 500 MW when needed, equivalent to the energy needed to power approximately 400,000 homes. The integration of energy storage capabilities not only increases grid stability, but also enables seamless integration with renewable resources, marking an important milestone in the transition to a greener energy future.
