Sodium Demonstration Project – Promoting Clean Energy

Bechtel is working with partner TerraPower to begin construction of the Natrium™ demonstration plant and lead the way in making the future of energy innovation a reality. Leveraging Bechtel’s unrivaled expertise in engineering, procurement and construction, we are driving the delivery of this visionary project and shaping the sustainable energy landscape for generations to come. .

More than just a technological feat, the Sodium Demonstration Project is a testament to our collective commitment to a cleaner, more sustainable future. By harnessing the power of advanced nuclear technology, we can drive meaningful progress towards decarbonization and combat the looming threat of climate change.

Together with TerraPower, we are building the foundation for a brighter tomorrow, driven by innovation, collaboration, and a shared vision of a world powered by clean, resilient energy.

advanced reactor technology

Bechtel is TerraPower’s engineering, procurement and construction partner on the first Natrium™ demonstration project in Kemmerer, Wyoming. This project is part of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Advanced Reactor Demonstration Program. Sodium technology, with its sodium fast reactor, integrated energy storage, and flexible power generation, provides carbon-free energy at a competitive cost and is ready for seamless integration into power grids with high levels of renewable energy. Masu. Bechtel adds unparalleled cutting-edge experience in the management and execution of large-scale nuclear projects to the team.

Bechtel: A legacy of excellence in nuclear power

With a heritage dating back to the 1950s, Bechtel has been a driving force in the evolution of nuclear power. Having designed, built or serviced more than 80 nuclear reactors in the United States and 150 worldwide, Bechtel’s history in nuclear power is a testament to our unwavering commitment to excellence and innovation. From delivering next-generation nuclear reactor technology to setting industry standards for safety and efficiency, Bechtel has played a pivotal role in shaping the global nuclear landscape.

vision

This advanced energy demonstration, set against the backdrop of a decommissioned coal-fired power plant in Kemmerer, Wyoming, aims to validate the design, construction, and operational features of a sodium system. Combining TerraPower and GE Hitachi technologies, the sodium reactor represents a breakthrough in clean and sustainable power generation. The project will bring online a modern, commercially capable nuclear reactor, providing carbon-free, reliable power to the grid and providing good-paying jobs in Wyoming for decades to come.

Main features

At the heart of the project is a 345 MWe sodium-cooled fast reactor combined with a molten salt-based energy storage system. This innovative energy storage technology allows the system to increase its output to 500 MW when needed, equivalent to the energy needed to power approximately 400,000 homes. The integration of energy storage capabilities not only increases grid stability, but also enables seamless integration with renewable resources, marking an important milestone in the transition to a greener energy future.
