Donald Trump’s ambition to conquer Canada was slammed by Canadian MP Jagmeet Singh, who warned the president-elect that there would be consequences for “picking a fight” with the nation.

Ahead of his inauguration, President Trump said the United States should acquire Canada, the Panama Canal and Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark. The president-elect even hinted at the possibility of Canada joining the United States as the 51st state.

In a video posted to X on Sunday, New Democratic Party leader Singh clarified his position following the resignation of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau last week.

“I have a message for Donald Trump: We are good neighbors, but if you pick a fight with Canada, you will pay a price,” read the caption of his video.

In the video, he declares, “This is not for sale, it is not for sale, it is not for sale and it will not be for sale.” Mr. Singh shared his experience living in Canada and asserted that Canadians are proud of their country and “ready to fight tooth and nail to protect it.”

“Now that wildfires are ravaging homes, Canadian firefighters have shown up. That’s who we are. We’re going to show up and support our neighbors.” But if Donald Trump is thinking, If you think you can sell us a fight, you’re going to have to pay a price,” he continued.

He also said that if President Trump imposes tariffs, Canada should retaliate with tariffs. “I think anyone running for prime minister should do the same.”

Here’s what President Trump said about Canada

President Trump claimed, “Many Canadians want Canada to become the 51st state.” He emphasized that the U.S. subsidizes Canada “on the order of $100 million a year,” adding, “That doesn’t make sense.”

“They would save a lot on taxes and military protection. I think it’s a great idea. 51st state!!!” he wrote in a post on Truth Social.

He also threatened to impose a 25% tariff on all imports from Canada and Mexico unless the country cracks down on immigration and the illegal drug trade.
