Malaysia’s new Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) is expected to create 20,000 skilled jobs for people on both sides of the Causeway. The business and investment zone, which covers Iskandar Development Area and Pengeran, also aims to support the expansion of 50 projects in the first five years and a total of 100 projects in the first 10 years.

Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim witnessed the exchange of agreements during the 11th Malaysia-Singapore Leaders’ Retreat in Putrajaya on January 7. “The great potential of the JS-SEZ is not only for Singapore companies to expand into Johor, but also for the two countries to work together to attract new investment projects from around the world,” added Prime Minister Wong.

The agreement will improve the flow of goods and freer movement of people between Singapore and Johor. The Republic and Malaysia facilitate and facilitate investment in 11 economic sectors from Singapore and other countries. These sectors include manufacturing, logistics, food security, tourism, energy, digital economy, green economy, financial services, business services, education, health, and more.

Industry-relevant skills training and education programs will be strengthened to attract talent to work in JS-SEZ.

Mr Teo Siong Seng, Chairman of the JS-SEZ Singapore Business Working Group, said more than 60 Singaporean companies have already expressed interest in participating in a business mission to the SEZ scheduled for mid-February. He said this reflected the interest of local companies in the project. , Singapore Business Federation (SBF).

What this means for the UK sector

With the signing of the new JS-SEZ agreement, which was finally concluded in January this year, and its subsequent benefits such as more seamless cross-border logistics and easier movement of people and goods, many businesses in Singapore are looking to benefit from it. I plan to enjoy it. Malaysia’s space and low cost environment. As more companies relocate or set up manufacturing, storage and distribution centers in Malaysia, the demand for talent will increase, as will the demand for skills training and education programs to fill existing talent and knowledge gaps. The UK holds a leading position in the education sector in both Singapore and Malaysia and stands to benefit from increased opportunities for collaboration with local higher education partners and industry.
