Mohanlal, who has been in the Malayalam film industry for nearly 50 years and is one of India’s greatest actors, recently spoke about why today’s films fail to capture the hearts of audiences. In a new interview, Mohanlal said that although directors today are good at their jobs, the subject matter of their films is not up to the mark. The actor recalled his old days when he used to appear in a wide range of films with good storylines and also talked about why he is reluctant to work with new directors.
Director Mohanlal told Galatta Plus, “The new generation has been watching old films, but when compared to newer films, they discover more drama, emotion and humor.” We have been able to work in some great films with great directors who have directed great stories like Bharathan, Mani Ratnam and Padmarajan. The new generation didn’t have the opportunity to work with them. We have a great director, but there is no context to the subject matter. I used to make commercial movies, action movies, comedy movies…We’ve built that property. It’s like a deposit we put down, and we live off the interest we receive. ”

Mohanlal, who co-starred with Prithviraj Sukumaran in the 2022 film Bro Daddy, described him as a difficult person to work with. The veteran star says, “Prithviraj is a great director. He knows the equipment, lenses, actors very well and keeps shooting till he’s satisfied. Working with him is quietly tough. Because you have to surrender to him. He’s going to keep bothering you until the shot is made. You can’t have an ego.”
The actor also praised director Blessy, calling him a “great director.” He said: “I’ve worked with him in a lot of movies. His first movie was with me. There are a lot of great directors.”
The actor shared why he is not seen working with new directors and said that he will work if the script does not include Mohanlal. He said, “What they (directors) don’t do well is when they come to me with a script, they find Mohanlal in it and don’t take it up.”
The actor is currently gearing up for the release of his directorial debut ‘Barroz’. This fantasy drama is scheduled to be released in theaters on December 25th.
