Chuck Schumer says Democrats will support renaming the Gulf of Mexico if President Trump helps cut costs

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said he has no problem renaming the Gulf of Mexico.

But that’s only if Trump helps cut costs for Americans, he said.

Schumer said this “may be a weird new idea” but it won’t “help people save money at the grocery store.”

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said Wednesday that Democrats are open to President-elect Donald Trump’s idea to rename the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America.”

But he said he would only do so if President Trump worked with Democrats on “a real plan to reduce costs for the American people.”

“The first thing the American people want us to focus on is not renaming bodies of water,” Schumer said in a speech on the floor, adding that his party’s priorities are “more about America than Donald Trump. “It is much more closely aligned with the public’s concerns.” Apparently Trump does too. ”

President Trump announced this idea at a press conference at Mar-a-Lago on Tuesday, but did not rule out using military force to seize control of Greenland or the Panama Canal.

The Democratic leadership’s comments essentially challenge President Trump to focus on the economic issues that helped him regain the presidency, rather than simply changing his name.

In the coming years, Democrats will argue that their economic policies are better for the working class than the Trump administration’s.

“Renaming the Gulf of Mexico may be a wild new idea, but it won’t help people save money at the grocery store. It won’t make going to the pharmacy more affordable. No,” Schumer said. “If Donald Trump wanted to change the name of the bay to sound more patriotic, we would help him on one condition: first come up with an actual plan rather than a concept of a plan. It’s about lowering the price of the bay.” Americans. ”
