Body found outside bus stop as death toll rises from winter stormPublished January 6th at 21:16 GMT

January 6th 21:16 GMT

The death toll from severe winter conditions affecting parts of the United States has risen to at least five.

A man was found dead “due to the cold” outside a bus stop in the Houston, Texas, area on Monday morning, a spokesperson for the city’s Metro confirmed to the BBC.

“The body was found right in front of a bus stop,” said Lester Grech, director of communications for the Harris County Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

This latest tragic death adds to the death toll believed to be caused by winter storm Blair, which brought inches of snow and subzero temperatures to much of the United States.

We previously reported at least one death in Missouri as the storm passed through. The state’s Highway Patrol said a pedestrian was killed when a truck that had stopped to let a passenger out began to slide on the road.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol responded to calls of more than 350 crashes and more than 1,000 motorists stranded as the winter storm rages on.

Two people were killed in a car crash in Kansas and one person was killed in Virginia due to bad weather.

A 32-year-old man was killed when his truck skidded off the road and hit a tree in Wakefield, Virginia, around midnight, police said. Authorities said the man was traveling too fast for road conditions, was not wearing a seatbelt and alcohol may have been a factor.
