The Golden Globe Awards aired on Sunday night, and the unofficial kickoff to Hollywood’s awards season brought glamor, laughter, and even a few sentimental tears.

Voters around the world praised television and movies that explored themes such as aging, immigration, acceptance, and survival, but the tone of the programming was primarily upbeat and celebratory, historically one of Hollywood’s biggest and most boozy shows. It was modeled after an event that was traditionally thought of as a party.

From host Nikki Glazer’s best lines to heartfelt acceptance speeches, here are the highlights from the 82nd Golden Globe Awards.

Host Nikki Glazer on stage at the Golden Globe Awards.

Globes host Nikki Glazer, the event’s first solo female host, did what she does best: playfully grill celebrities.

Glazer began his monologue with a joke that referenced the popular weight loss drug that the show was “Ozempic’s biggest night,” then made fun of Timothée Chalamet’s name (and beard) and added that Adam Sandler’s signature It even featured Chalamet saying his name in Rhythm of the Comedy.

Double nominee Selena Gomez and her fiancé Benny Blanco also performed monologues. Glaser joked that Blanco, who went to the show with his fiance Gomez, was only there “thanks to the genie who made that wish come true.”

Glazer, the leader of the television broadcast, hilariously attempted to combine “Wicked” and “Conclave” into a song called “Popolar,” while wearing a cardinal or pope hat and holding Glinda’s staff. But that didn’t last long, and as the song began, Glazer mimed receiving a note in his earphones from a producer informing him that the number was “terrible.”

About halfway through the show, Glaser took stock of how far he’s come by presenting a tally of who was thanked during his acceptance speech.

It turns out the cast and crew scored big with 11 shoutouts, the mothers got enough love to rank second, and TV host Mario Lopez got a mention. However, the person who received no love at all was “God, the creator of the universe” himself.

“No wonder in this godless town,” Glaser joked.

Adrien Brody with his parents Sylvia Plachy and Elliot Brody.

Sunday’s ceremony was certainly emotional, with many candidates bringing their parents to the event. Some honorees also name their loved ones on stage.

Zoe Saldana, who won Best Supporting Female Actor for “Emilia Perez,” brought her mother, Asalia Nazario, as her date. Ariana Grande, nominated for her supporting role in “Wicked,” also brought her mother Joan Grande, and actress Margaret Qualley brought her father Paul.

Glen Powell’s father, Cindy Powell, and Glen Powell Sr. proudly accompanied their son to celebrate the actor’s first nomination for the Netflix film Hitman.

Globe winner Adrien Brody’s speech thanking his parents was one of the most emotional moments of the night. He thanked his mother and immigrant ancestors for their sacrifices, which matched his “brutalist” personality.

Surprise winner Fernanda Torres, who won the trophy for Best Female Actor in a Drama Film for the Brazilian film “I’m Still Here,” also paid tribute to her mother by dedicating her victory to her.

“You can’t imagine she was here 25 years ago. This is like proof that art can last a lifetime, even in difficult moments like this,” she said. . “This same thing is happening around the world right now with so much horror, and this is a movie that helps you think about how to survive in these difficult times. So to my mother, to my family… really thank you.”

Ahead of the awards ceremony, Torres announced that she was the second Brazilian to be nominated, with her mother, Fernanda Montenegro, being the first Brazilian to be nominated for her role in 1998’s “Central Station.” spoke. Her mother also co-stars in the film directed by Walter Salles.

His acceptance speech at the Globes was funny, polite, and moving.

Demi Moore, who won Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy for her role in the horror comedy “The Substance,” her first win, gave a tearful speech about self-acceptance and was inspired by the Beverly Hilton Many people in the ballroom stood up. .

“I really wasn’t expecting it. I’m just in shock right now,” Moore said as she took to the stage. “I’ve been doing this for over 45 years and this is the first time I’ve won anything as an actor, so I’m very humbled and very grateful.”

Moore, 62, recalled an exchange nearly 30 years ago with a film producer who called her a “popcorn actress.”

“At that moment, I meant it to me that this is something I’m not allowed to do,” she said of the win. “And I accepted it and believed it, but it ate away at me over time to the point where I thought maybe a few years ago this might be my limit. Maybe I was whole and Maybe I did what I had to do.”

She said she came up with the script for The Substance when she was at a “low point” in her life.

“[And]when I had this magical, bold, brave, out-of-the-box, totally crazy script, The Substance, come across my desk, the universe told me it wasn’t over yet. I said,” Moore continued.

Colin Farrell praised his make-up artist and craft services team for their win on “Penguin.”

While accepting his award, Farrell joked, “I can’t thank anyone for this. I did it all myself.” He went on to say that it “takes a village” to make a series, and credited “Carolina,” a prosthetics artist and craft service, for giving him a much-needed snack while he was overheating on set. He expressed his gratitude to the cast and staff, including: Heavy makeup is required for the role.

When the team of “Wicked” won both cinematic and box office, director Jon Chu spoke of the joy of bringing people together to promote understanding and connection through film.

Zendaya hit the red carpet on Sunday.

Many of the most illustrious guests lit up the globe with a true golden look. Stars including host Glazer, Ariana Grande, Cate Blanchett, Kristen Bell, Mikey Madison, Mindy Kaling and Elle Fanning all wore gold dresses.

Glaser appeared on the red carpet wearing a custom-made Prabal Gurung dress and told Women’s Wear Daily that her little golden globe-shaped purse was just for show. She joked that although the bag was empty, it could also be used as a weapon.

Karin was seen wearing a metallic gold column dress by Ashi Studio, while Oscar winner Blanchett turned heads in a gold Louis Vuitton number.

There was also plenty of shimmering satin and metallics on display, including Angelina Jolie’s silver-beaded Alexander McQueen pieces and Moore’s iridescent champagne dress. But while many attendees opted for classic silhouettes in muted tones, there were also pops of bright color, especially red.

Dakota Fanning, nominated for her role in Ripley, turned heads in a red strapless bodice dress by Dolce & Gabbana with a daring slit at the thigh. Also making an impression were comedian Ali Wong (Balenciaga), Sheryl Lee Ralph (Custom St. John) and Emma Stone (Louis Vuitton), who wore shades from ruby to burgundy.

CNN’s Oscar Holland, Lisa Respers France and Tori B. Powell contributed to this report.
