Government keen on India becoming leader in semiconductor manufacturing, Industry 4.0

In a significant event, Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya, Union Minister for Railways, Information, Broadcasting and Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnau, and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated the National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT). It was considered that the Becoming a university. The inauguration ceremony was held at 12 locations, including five in northeastern states, during an event held in Guwahati.

NIELIT is the only university under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and has been serving the nation with a focus on transforming India’s semiconductor and digital technology landscape.

A memorandum of understanding was signed between NIELIT and Tata Electronics Private Limited to strengthen the semiconductor skills ecosystem in India. The document was signed by MM Tripathi, Director General, NIELIT, and Randhir Thakur, CEO and MD, Tata Electronics. This includes the establishment of skills centers, the development of diploma and certification programs, and workshops on semiconductor ATMP technology (assembly, test, marking and packaging). Tata Electronics provides technical know-how and internship opportunities. NIELIT focuses on education, training, and outreach. This partnership highlights our commitment to creating opportunities and fostering a robust semiconductor ecosystem in the Northeast region.

Vaishnau also stressed that the government is keen to make India a world leader in semiconductor manufacturing, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and Industry 4.0. He emphasized the need to provide students with skills in this new and changing world. He described the Northeast as India’s “new engine” and vowed to build a NIELIT campus on Jagi Road near Guwahati to develop a semiconductor and electronics manufacturing hub.

Sarma echoed this vision, emphasizing the region’s potential to become a global hub for semiconductor production. He emphasized that the swift approval of land allocation for the new campus at Jagiroad, which was achieved in record time, is a testament to the government’s commitment to developing local talent and creating employment opportunities. Our ultimate goal is to make Assam an important hub for the global semiconductor sector, with chips labeled as ‘Made in India’ or ‘Made in Assam’,” Sarma said.

According to Lakshman Prasad Acharya, the inauguration of NIELIT is a historic moment. The university will offer specialized education programs in cutting-edge digital technologies such as semiconductor design and manufacturing, artificial intelligence, blockchain technology, automotive electronics, drone technology, and cybersecurity. Through the provision of world-class education and training, the institution strives to drive innovation and create a skilled workforce capable of supporting India’s aspirations in the cutting-edge industrial world.

NIELIT was established with the status of ‘Deemed University’ by the Ministry of Education and has its main campus in Ropar, Punjab. It operates through 11 constituent units spread across the country. Its curriculum, designed in collaboration with industry leaders, focuses on emerging technologies and ensures graduates are job-ready from day one. The university is aligned with the National Education Policy 2020 and focuses on accessibility, flexibility and industry relevance. education.
