Affordable and common New Year’s feasts in many households include cornbread, ham, vegetables, and black-eyed peas. But what do these foods represent? New Year’s Eve is a time when many types of festivities are held, including luxurious dinners with caviar and champagne.

Here is a list of the top items you should have on your plate to bring good luck in 2025.

Black-eyed peas in the United States: A common New Year’s Eve meal for many Americans in the southern United States is black-eyed peas, which are believed to “bring hope, prosperity and good fortune into the new year,” said Bobby Ford. Ta. He told FOX News Digital that he owns Bobby Q’s “Just Like Mamas.”

Bobby Q’s Jus Like Mama’s is a Long Island soul food restaurant.

“These peas are also a symbol of spiritual abundance and, due to their nutritional value, are also seen as a way to promote health and well-being in the year ahead,” Ford said.

Enslaved Africans brought West African black-eyed peas to the United States, Ford said. Women hid peas in their hair.

“This law allowed them to grow familiar foods on new land and preserve some of their culture and food,” he said of the tradition that began during the Civil War.

It eventually became a New Year’s tradition signifying optimism and the prospect of future success.

Twelve Grapes in Spain: The Spanish custom of eating twelve grapes at midnight on New Year’s Eve dates back to the 1800s. This tradition later spread to other Spanish-speaking countries.

In recent years, videos about this tradition have become popular on TikTok. In 2023, a video posted by the Kroger grocery store chain received more than 6 million views.

A TikTok video of someone eating 12 grapes says, “If you can finish eating the grapes before the chime ends, you’ll have good luck all year round.”

This tradition continues in Peru, where eating 12 grapes under the table is said to bring good luck in love in the coming year.

Toshikoshi Soba: As a symbol of hope for longevity, noodles are commonly eaten on birthdays and other occasions throughout Asia.

Toshikoshi soba is a noodle-like meal eaten on New Year’s Eve in Japan. Buckwheat is used to prepare noodles because it symbolizes fortitude, tenacity, and good luck.
